Five Reasons to Take an Alaska Cruise
When most people think of cruises, they picture sunny skies, tropical beaches, and swaying palm trees. But what if your next cruise could take you somewhere truly unique, offering a mix of rugged wilderness, majestic landscapes, and experiences you won’t find anywhere else? That’s what an Alaska cruise is all about. Here are five compelling reasons why an Alaska cruise deserves a spot on your bucket list.

1. Stunning Scenery
Alaska’s landscapes are nothing short of breathtaking. From towering glaciers calving into icy waters to awe-inspiring fjords and snow-capped mountain ranges, the natural beauty here is unparalleled. Imagine gliding through a beautiful fjord, where massive ice structures sparkle in the sunlight, or watching the sunset over the Inside Passage, an intricate maze of waterways. Each view feels like a postcard come to life, making every moment onboard unforgettable. Camera in hand, you’ll find endless opportunities to capture jaw-dropping photographs—this is nature at its most dramatic.

2. Mouthwatering Food
Alaska isn’t just a feast for the eyes—it’s a feast for your taste buds as well! Cruise ships serving this region often feature locally sourced specialties, such as wild-caught Alaskan salmon, fresh crab, and halibut straight from the icy Pacific waters. Pair your meal with a craft beer or cocktail inspired by the region, and you’re in for a culinary adventure. Some cruises even offer themed dining experiences, like seafood nights or live cooking demos showcasing Alaskan fare you can’t find elsewhere. It’s not just food—it’s a celebration of Alaska’s rich bounty. Some of our favorites? Anything at Beak Restaurant in Sika, AK, rockfish tacos at Deckhand Dave’s in Juneau, AK, and the fried fish at Alaska Fish House in Ketchikan, AK.

3. Unique Excursions
The off-ship experiences on an Alaska cruise are unlike any you’d find by the beach. Think dog sledding across pristine glaciers, kayaking in serene bays surrounded by towering peaks, or taking a scenic train ride through the rugged landscapes of the Yukon. Feeling adventurous? Try a helicopter tour that drops you onto a remote glacier or go zip lining through the lush forests of Juneau. These excursions are designed to immerse you in the heart of Alaska’s wilderness, offering hands-on adventures that feel like something out of a wilderness documentary.

4. Abundant Wildlife
An Alaska cruise is a wildlife enthusiast’s dream. These icy waters and vast forests are home to some of North America’s most iconic animals. Spot playful sea otters, massive humpback whales breaching in the distance, or orcas slicing through the waves. Keep your binoculars handy for bald eagles soaring overhead and bears wandering the shorelines, especially during the salmon run. On land excursions, you might even glimpse moose, wolves, or mountain goats. The opportunity to see such diverse wildlife in its natural habitat is one of the true highlights of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

5. Rich History and Culture
Beyond its natural wonders, Alaska has a vibrant history that comes alive on a cruise. Visit charming towns like Skagway, where Gold Rush-era saloons and wooden boardwalks transport you back in time, or explore Sitka’s blend of Russian and Native Alaskan heritage. Many excursions include cultural experiences like totem pole carving demonstrations, storytelling sessions with Alaska Native guides, or visits to museums that showcase the state’s fascinating history. An Alaska cruise isn’t just visually stunning—it’s also an enriching experience that deepens your understanding of this remarkable region.

Plan Your Alaska Adventure Today
An Alaska cruise is far more than a voyage—it’s an immersive adventure that combines unparalleled natural beauty, unforgettable cuisine, incredible wildlife, exciting excursions, and a dose of history and culture. Whether you’re a seasoned cruiser looking for a refreshing change of scenery or someone seeking an adventure that will stay with you forever, Alaska has something extraordinary to offer.

The Increase in Juneau Dockage Fees: What it Means for Cruise Tourism
Cruise lines docking at Juneau’s city-owned facilities will face significantly higher dockage fees starting in 2026. According to city officials, these changes will roughly double the amount cruise lines currently pay, bringing millions in additional revenue to the city. The Juneau Assembly recently approved the change unanimously.

New Regulation
The new regulation applies only to large cruise ships and shifts the fee structure from tonnage and vessel length to passenger capacity. Alix Pierce, Juneau’s Visitor Industry Director, stated that the updated fees make the city’s rates more competitive with private docks in the area and other ports in Southeast Alaska.
The adjustments are expected to substantially increase revenue. Last season, the city collected approximately $2.5 million in dockage fees; with these changes, that figure is projected to nearly double to about $5 million annually. These funds will contribute to the city’s Docks and Harbors enterprise fund, which offers more flexibility in how the revenue is utilized compared to other cruise-related charges.

Juneau currently owns two of the four cruise ship docks nearest to Marine Park. Meanwhile, the Assembly has also approved the development of another private dock, further expanding docking options for cruise lines. Pierce noted that cruise companies had been made aware of the forthcoming changes and are unlikely to resist.
Additionally, the city’s marine passenger fees, used for specific visitor-related projects under a settlement agreement with the Cruise Lines International Association Alaska, will remain unaffected by this adjustment. City port director Carl Uchytil emphasized that the dockage fees offer fewer restrictions, giving the city broader avenues for investment.

Effects on Cruise Passengers
This increase in dockage fees is likely to have a direct impact on cruise passengers. With the raised fees, cruise lines will likely pass on the additional costs to their customers, resulting in higher ticket prices for cruises that make stops in Juneau. Since Juneau is a staple on most Alaskan itineraries, this could potentially discourage some tourists from choosing an Alaska cruise, as they may opt for cheaper options.

Is Disney Planning to Sail Year-Round from Galveston, Texas Starting in 2027?
A recent city council meeting with the Galveston Wharves Board of Trustees may have just dropped a major hint about the future of Disney Cruise Line operations in Texas. While nothing has been confirmed by Disney just yet, remarks made during the meeting strongly suggest that year-round Disney sailings could soon be a reality out of Galveston starting in 2027.
Rodger E. Rees, Port Director and CEO of Galveston Wharves, stated during a discussion about the Port’s updated Master Plan:
“Disney is expanding to full-time here in Galveston starting in ’27.”
He went on to say:
“They’re putting a lot of money into that, and because of that… I believe what they’re planning on doing is bringing in… there’s a new ship. I don’t know if you recall the news that they bought a ship out of bankruptcy… it’s a bigger ship. That’s what they’re talking about bringing here.”
Is the Disney Adventure Heading to Texas?
That “bigger ship” could very well be the Disney Adventure. Originally known as the Global Dream, this ship was acquired by Disney Cruise Line out of bankruptcy during the pandemic. The ship is currently undergoing a full Disney-style reimagine and is scheduled to begin sailing in December 2025 out of Singapore on 3- and 4-night voyages.

Those sailings in Singapore are currently scheduled through September 2026. After that? Disney hasn’t confirmed its next move—but the Galveston news certainly makes you wonder. Could the Disney Adventure be headed to the Gulf Coast as part of Disney’s expanded presence?
A Growing Focus on the Western Caribbean
This move would align with a broader trend we’re seeing in the cruise industry. Royal Caribbean recently unveiled a massive Western Caribbean expansion, including its new Perfect Day at Mexico and a lineup of Royal Beach Clubs designed to enhance Western itineraries.

Disney seems to be following a similar trajectory. If they’re eyeing Galveston for year-round service, that could signal even bigger plans in the region.
Could a New Disney Destination Be Next?
Let’s take this one step further—could Disney be planning a third private destination somewhere in the Western Caribbean to support this expansion? With the popularity of Castaway Cay and the recent opening of Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Disney add another island to its lineup. “Castaway Cay Cozumel,” anyone?
We’ll have to wait and see what officially gets announced, but for now, this Galveston news has certainly sparked excitement—and speculation.

10 Tips for Making the Most of Your Day at Disney’s Castaway Cay
Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay, is the cherry on top of a magical Disney Cruise adventure. Located in the Bahamas, this tropical paradise has something for everyone—whether you’re looking to relax on soft sandy beaches, enjoy thrilling water activities, or immerse yourself in Disney’s signature touches.

To help you make the most of your day, here are 10 tips to ensure your time on Castaway Cay is as unforgettable as the rest of your Disney cruise.

1. Get an Early Start
Time flies on Castaway Cay, so plan to debark as soon as the ship allows passengers to disembark. By heading to the island early, you’ll snap up the best beach loungers, have shorter wait times for activities, and enjoy the serenity before it gets busier.

Pro Tip:
Breakfast is served on the ship before disembarkation. Fuel up so you’re energized for a full day of fun!
2. Pick the Right Beach for You
Castaway Cay offers three distinct beach areas to suit different preferences:
- Family Beach (Scuttle’s Cove): Perfect for families with kids. Plenty of activities nearby, plus lifeguards for safety.
- Serenity Bay: This adults-only retreat offers peace and quiet for those looking to relax without little ones nearby.
- Teen Hideout: Specifically designed for teens to chill and hang out in their own space.
Choose the beach that best matches your vibe and group dynamic!

3. Book Activities in Advance
Popular activities like parasailing, snorkeling, and bike rentals can sell out quickly. Reserve your spots on the Disney Cruise Line app before you arrive! If you’re feeling adventurous, don’t miss the chance to explore the Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure, where you can feed and snorkel with friendly stingrays.

Pro Tip:
If you’re a runner, consider signing up for the Castaway Cay 5K. It’s free and comes with a medal to celebrate your achievement!
4. Rent a Private Cabana
Upgrade your day with a private cabana. These luxurious spaces offer shade, loungers, towels, sunscreen, and even a stocked fridge with beverages. Cabanas also come with a dedicated area of the beach, making them ideal if you’re craving privacy and exclusivity.
Heads Up:
Cabanas are in high demand, so book yours as early as possible.
5. Bring Your Snorkeling Gear
Castaway Cay’s snorkeling lagoon is a treasure trove of underwater magic. Disney added easter egg surprises, like Mickey and Minnie statues, for guests to discover below the surface. You can rent snorkeling gear, but bringing your own saves time and ensures a perfect fit.
Hot Tip:
Head to the lagoon early for clear water and fewer crowds.
6. Enjoy a Bike Ride Around the Island or Run/walk in the Free 5K
Hop on a bike and explore paved trails that lead to hidden gems like Observation Tower, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the island. It’s a fun way to see more than just the beaches and soak in Castaway Cay’s beauty.
The 5K is self-paced. You can start it at any time by visiting the Bike Rental booth near the beginning of the trail. When you are done, they will give you a 5K “medal”.

7. Treat Your Tastebuds
Your day on the island includes lunch, served at one of the island’s barbecue spots:
- Cookies BBQ or Cookies Too (family-friendly)
- Serenity Bay Barbecue (adults-only)
The menu includes BBQ staples like ribs, chicken, burgers, and sides, as well as kid-friendly options. Don’t forget to grab a refreshing soft-serve ice cream cone to cool off in the Bahamian sun!

8. Take Photos with Disney Characters
Castaway Cay is sprinkled with Mickey magic, including chances to meet Disney characters in tropical attire. These are exclusive to the island, so don’t miss the opportunity for unique photos! Spots are set up throughout the island, like near the Welcome Center and at Serenity Bay.

Pro Tip:
Go toward the end of the day for shorter lines, as many families head back to the ship early.
9. Relax with a Drink at the Bars
No tropical vacation is complete without a refreshing drink in hand. Enjoy signature cocktails or cold beers at island bars like The Sand Bar or Conched Out Bar. Adults can also visit Serenity Bay’s Bar for a quieter, more laid-back experience.

Insider Tip:
Ask for the Konk Kooler—Castaway Cay’s signature drink featuring a delightful mix of rum, passion fruit, and coconut.
10. Don’t Forget Souvenirs
Before heading back to the ship, stop by She Sells Sea Shells…and Everything Else for unique Castaway Cay merchandise that you won’t find anywhere else. Items like beachwear and exclusive Mickey-themed gear make for perfect keepsakes.

Fun Fact:
Your Key to the World card is the only payment method accepted on the island, so there’s no need to carry extra cash.
Plan Ahead for an Unforgettable Day
Your time on Castaway Cay is limited, so a little planning goes a long way. Whether you prefer to lounge by the turquoise waters, explore tropical trails, or enjoy exciting water sports, there’s something for everyone on Disney’s private island paradise.
Make the most of your time, soak in the magic, and create memories that will last long after the cruise returns to port.

No, guests of all ages are welcome at the Royal Beach Club℠ Paradise Island.
Is the location ADA accessible?
Yes, the Royal Beach Club℠ Paradise Island meets ADA accessibility standards.
Are other cruise line guests allowed?
No, access is reserved for Royal Caribbean Group guests and Bahamian residents, based on availability.
How is the Royal Beach Club℠ different from Perfect Day at CocoCay?
The Royal Beach Club℠ Paradise Island is an exclusive, all-inclusive experience requiring a day pass, while Perfect Day at CocoCay is a complimentary port of call with additional paid attractions.
Paul and I are very excited to try this new option out soon. We typically treat Nassau as a sea day and stay on the ship, but I’m interest to see what Royal Beach Club has to offer. Depending on the price vs value, this could positively change the way we view Nassau as a port option.

Additional Fee to Be Added for Cruise Passengers Visiting Mexico
The Mexican government has announced a $5 visitor fee for cruise-ship passengers arriving at any Mexican port, effective July 1. This decision follows an agreement with the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA), which represents 95% of cruise ships making stops in Mexico. Initially, the government proposed a $42 fee, but after extensive discussions and pushback from cruise operators, the amount was significantly reduced. Over the next three years, however, this fee will gradually increase to $21 per passenger.

According to Border Report, the visitor fee will be incorporated directly into the overall cost of the cruise, so passengers won’t need to pay the fee directly upon arrival. FCCA has expressed gratitude for the compromise, emphasizing how it supports cruise tourism while benefiting local communities reliant on this industry.
The FCCA has explained that Mexico expects around 3,300 cruise ships to dock at its ports this year, bringing an estimated 10 million passengers.

Cruise tourism has become a major source of income for many countries, especially those in the Caribbean and Latin America. These regions heavily rely on the revenue generated by cruise ships docking at their ports, as it boosts their economy and creates job opportunities for locals.
However, there have been concerns about the negative impact of cruise tourism on local communities and the environment. Large cruise ships can cause environmental damage through pollution and over-tourism can lead to cultural erosion in small villages that are not equipped to handle a large influx of visitors.

To address these issues, organizations like FCCA work closely with governments and local communities to develop sustainable practices for cruise tourism.

How to Choose the Perfect Cruise Destination for Your Vacation
Planning a cruise vacation can feel thrilling but a bit overwhelming—especially when there are so many incredible destinations to choose from. Whether you’re craving sun-soaked beaches or eager to explore icy landscapes, finding the perfect cruise destination is key to creating memorable experiences. Here’s your ultimate guide to selecting the perfect destination for your next cruise adventure.
1. Consider the Season and Climate
The timing of your cruise plays a huge role in determining the best destination. Different regions shine in different seasons, so factor in weather conditions to ensure an enjoyable trip.
- Tropical Destinations like the Caribbean and Southeast Asia are ideal during winter months when temperatures are mild and dry.
- Mediterranean Cruises are best from late spring to early fall, offering warm days perfect for sightseeing.
- Alaskan Cruises typically run May through September with long daylight hours great for exploring glaciers and wildlife.
- Northern Europe Cruises, such as journeys through the Norwegian fjords or Baltic ports, are stunning during the summer months.
2. Think About Your Interests
What do you want most out of your vacation? Your personal preferences will help narrow down your options.
- If you enjoy relaxing on pristine beaches, look into cruises to the Caribbean, South Pacific, or Maldives.
- For those who love history and culture, the Mediterranean or Northern Europe may be a great choice, with stops at iconic cities like Rome, Athens, and St. Petersburg.
- Adventure seekers, consider an Alaskan or South American cruise for glacier hikes, wildlife spotting, or ziplining.
- If you’re drawn to nature and unique ecosystems, Antarctica or the Galápagos Islands offer once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
3. Decide on Cruise Length
The length of your vacation is another factor when choosing a destination.
- 3–5 day cruises are perfect for nearby destinations like the Bahamas, Baja Mexico, or short river cruises in Europe.
- 7–10 day cruises allow for visiting regions like the Mediterranean, Caribbean, or Alaska.
- Two-week or longer voyages are an amazing way to explore exotic or remote destinations, like transatlantic itineraries, Antarctica, or the South Pacific.
4. Cruise Line and Ship Amenities
Different cruise lines cater to different styles of travel, so your choice of destination could also align with the onboard experience you prefer.
- Luxury lines like Seabourn or Silversea often specialize in exotic locales, such as the Arctic or Southeast Asia.
- Family-oriented lines such as Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line offer itineraries packed with kid-friendly activities in the Caribbean and Alaska.
- Expedition cruises, like those from Lindblad Expeditions or Hurtigruten, focus on more adventurous and remote regions, including Antarctica and the Amazon.
5. Budget Considerations
Your budget will also help shape your destination choice.
- Caribbean and Mexican Riviera cruises often offer affordable options with plenty of deals year-round.
- Mediterranean cruises, especially during peak summer, can cost more but offer immense cultural and culinary rewards.
- For higher-end destinations like Antarctica or world cruises, plan a larger budget to cover the unique experiences included in those itineraries.
6. Explore the Ports of Call
Beyond the cruise itself, the destinations you’ll visit along the way can make or break your experience. Research the ports of call and the activities they offer when choosing your cruise.
- Do the ports match your style? Some destinations are brimming with historical landmarks, while others offer more laid-back beach days.
- Are there shore excursions that excite you? Look for activities like snorkeling, wine tasting, or exploring ancient ruins.
7. Plan for Unique Experiences
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, consider a unique cruise destination that offers once-in-a-lifetime experiences.
- Antarctica: Witness spectacular icebergs and rare wildlife in one of the world’s most remote destinations.
- Galápagos Islands: Get up close with giant tortoises and marine iguanas in this ecological wonderland.
- Norwegian Fjords: Cruise through dramatic fjords, surrounded by breathtaking mountains and cascading waterfalls.
- Asia River Cruises: Explore the Mekong or Yangtze Rivers and immerse yourself in the rich culture of Southeast Asia.
8. Balance Relaxation and Exploration
Some travelers want to spend their time lounging on deck with a drink in hand, while others crave hiking excursions and bustling city tours. Match your ideal activity level to the destination’s offerings.
- For a relaxing escape, consider cruises to the Maldives or the Caribbean, where you’ll find endless beaches to unwind.
- If you’re after action-packed adventures, Alaskan and Northern Europe cruises offer kayaking, glacier walks, and city explorations.
Final Thoughts
Choosing the perfect cruise destination starts with understanding your priorities, interests, and goals for the trip. From tropical isles to icy fjords, there’s a cruise itinerary for every traveler.
